Rainer Hatoum studierte Ethnologie und Islamwissenschaft an der Freien Universität Berlin und promovierte 2002 an der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main mit einer Studie über das Intertribal Powwow in Nordamerika. Zwischen 2005 und 2019 arbeitete Hatoum am Ethnologischen Museum Berlin, der Freien Universität Berlin, der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main und als unabhängiger Forscher, u. a. für das Bard Graduate Center in New York. In einer Reihe von Forschungsprojekten beschäftigte er sich mit der Frage langfristiger Partnerschaften zwischen deutschen Museen und verschiedenen indigenen Gemeinschaften (Navajo und Kwakwaka’wakw). Im März 2020 nahm Hatoum seine Arbeit am Städtischen Museum Braunschweig auf.
