Database

The PAESE joint database brings together object collections that have been in the focus of research of the institutions involved in the project (Lower Saxon State Museum Hanover, Ethnographic Collection of the Georg-August-University Göttingen, State Museum Natur und Mensch Oldenburg, Roemer- and Pelizaeus-Museum Hildesheim, Municipal Museum Brunswick, Ev.-luth. Missionswerk in Lower Saxony Hermannsburg).

Since the database has been maintained by the Networ for Provenance Research in Lower Saxony, additional collections of objects from these and other institutions in Lower Saxony that research collections from colonial contexts have been successively added since 2022.

The focus is on the documentation of the origin (provenance) of the objects. The information provided represents the current or latest state of research and is continuously supplemented.

The data providers have aimed for the greatest possible transparency. In justified exceptional cases, we refrained from publicly displaying images for moral-ethical or legal reasons. This was done in coordination with our colleagues and partners from the countries of origin.

Further information on object selection, controlled vocabularies and definitions of different forms of acquisition you can find here.

As part of the 3-Road Strategy, a new provenance vocabulary was developed, which was published in 2023 at http://ddb.vocnet.org/provenance/p0030
