Bernhard von Bothmer war als Generalleutnant in "Deutsch-Ostafrika" und beteiligte sich im Kontext des "Wahehe-Kriegs" (1891-1894) nachgewiesenermaßen an Gewaltaktionen gegenüber der lokalen Bevölkerung. Er verstarb am 13.10.1894 in einem Gefecht bei Konko. Seine Mutter Luise von Bothmer schenkte dem "Provinzialmuseum" die von ihrem Sohn an sich genommenen Objekte.
